I now present to you: Elephants! According to the internet (I haven't done any more research than that), if you see a circus elephant tied to a shallow stake with a simple rope, it will not try to escape - even though it could easily dislodge the restraint. It seems, that when when they are born, baby elephants are tied with a strong chain to a secure stake. They pull and struggle as best they can, but eventually they give up trying. At that stage of growth, they just don't posses the power. |
Interestingly, even after the baby has grown into a mighty adult, only a simple string is necessary to keep it in place, for even though you and I know it could easily bust out of the circus, no attempt will ever be made. In the mind of the elephant, it just isn't possible. If we could reason with the elephant, it would be to no avail - until it realizes the futility of the rope. But once it catches on to the misunderstanding - it's already free.
In our minds, you and I have many beliefs that keep us tethered in a feeling. Beliefs that in reality have no power over us. As a person begins to realize the true source of all feelings, they'll begin to understand that the truth is, we are already free - we just don't quite see it yet. It also shows us, that if we are to experience our already present freedom, it will arrive as a gift from G-d, a realization, through the power of Thought and Consciousness.
